  • Mental Health and Wellbeing at Lowerhouse Junior School

    At Lowerhouse Junior School, we aim to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for our whole school community and recognise that mental health and wellbeing is as important to our lives as physical health. We have a supportive and caring ethos which understands that everyone experiences times in life where they may be more vulnerable and at times may need additional support.

    Our aim is to help develop the protective factors which build resilience to mental health problems and to be a school where:

    • Children feel safe and have a sense of belonging

    • Children feel confident in themselves and are able to express a range of emotions appropriately

    • All children and families feel valued

    • Children have a key trusted adult they can talk openly with without judgement or stigma

    • Children feel pride in themselves and are confident

    • Positive mental health is promoted and valued

    • Bullying is not tolerated

    • Children learn and achieve

    • Children develop emotional resilience to manage setbacks

    We believe Lowerhouse Junior School has a key role in promoting children’s positive mental health and wellbeing and has developed a range of strategies and approaches which includes:

    • Campaigns and assemblies to raise awareness of mental health

    • Playground Pals

    • Daily breakfast for all pupils

    • Nurture Groups

    • 1:1 support sessions with MPSL

    • Transition programme to high school

    • Celebration assemblies

    • Circle times

    • Worry boxes

    • Metal health teaching programmes – KidSafe

    • Theraputic Activities including Lego Therapy, art, relaxation, mindfulness and breathing techniques

    • Group sessions from Children and Family Wellbeing Service and East Lancashire Mental Health Support Team

     

    School also works closely with the Children and Family Wellbeing services and East Lancashire Trust Mental Health Support Team to provide external support for children and families where needed.
